 Serious Fun Minimize

Greetings!

This church stuff is serious business.

We do after all deal with a lot of serious issues, and it is something that I do take very seriously. But there is a difference between taking things seriously and always being serious. What I mean by that is that ought to be plenty of room for fun in our faith walk. And this past week, I was part of two examples of just how important having some serious fun can be.

The first was last Friday night in Decatur. By my guess at least a couple of thousand people gathered in the Decatur Square for the city’s annual “Beach Party.” It had an added attraction for some of us here at BCC because the entertainment for the night was “Terry Lee and the G.T.’s” featuring our own Terry Evans as the front man. The night was warm but was perfect for a night out with good friends and great music. The good friends were there: by my count about 40 folks from BCC came to celebrate the end of a work week, dance and simply have fun. And it was big fun. I am in awe of Terry and his bandmates and their ability to get people moving, to hit just the right combinations of songs, to really get people feelin’ good.

As we listened to the music, shared some good time with friends, danced a bit, I was once again glad to be part of Brookhaven Christian Church. We do understand the serious business that is the church, but we also understand that fellowship and fun is an important part of being an active, vibrant congregation. When Terry sent out greetings to his friends from BCC from the stage and then added, “Hey, it’s a fun church!” I was reminded again that he is right! I also wondered how many other church groups might have been represented there. I hope there were many, because it was a great way to be “the church”…just out havin’ fun.

The second example I had this week of the importance of serious fun was BCC’s annual Vacation Bible School. Under the amazing leadership of Debbie Kinney, our Director of Christian Education and many, many volunteers who put hours into making this a successful and fun event, VBS was proof that fun is an essential part of our faith. The kids were able to participate in activities, games, mission projects, songs and learn about God and God’s love for us. Each night the kids left anxious for the next day to come quickly. They learned things that they’ll never forget and they had great, great fun while doing it. I’m sure that there were some sad kids come Tuesday night when they found out that VBS was over!

One night I was watching the kids as LeAnn Blanchard led them through some raucous songs: learning dance moves, jumping to the beat of the music, laughing, singing and reveling, all to God’s glory. As I watched some them be swept up in the music, I couldn’t help but think, “Hey some of their parents were dancing like this just a couple of nights ago!” That’s a good sign. For them, for the church, and for everyone who celebrates the idea that our faith journey is only complete when it is mixed with some serious fun.

For Your Prayer List
Rev. Pam McGrath, a Timothy of BCC, has been on our prayer list because of some scheduled surgery to remove a mass that was found. When she was admitted to the hospital, last minute tests found no trace of the mass! She was sent home with a clean bill of health and thanks you all for your prayers.

Please keep Allison, a friend of Kerry Whatley, in your prayers. She is 21 weeks pregnant and has just been diagnosed with colon cancer. Please keep Allison and her whole family in your prayers as she awaits surgery and a decision on the best way to proceed.

Announcements
We had another great collection for our “Miracle of Abundance” basket this week. Thanks to all who brought canned goods. And keep it up! The basket will be a permanent part of our worship each week as we seek to help those who have been hit hard by the economic downturn and the rising price of gas and food. We take the collected goods to the Oglethorpe Food Pantry and they report that they can use everything we send them. So remember: when you leave your house on Sunday morning, grab your Bible and 2 or 3 canned goods and come on to church!

This is a big week at camp. Four campers from BCC are at Mid-High Camp at Camp Christian. They are Landon Loaiza Flavio, Hannah Chipman, Tomas Chipman and Kaitlyn Fey. You can send them an e-mail at camp@gadisciples.org and in the “Subject” space typing “Campers Name – Mid-High Camp.”

I hope you will be able to worship with us this Sunday as we once again gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day together. This week the sermon is titled “The Miracle of Bartimaeus” and the scripture passage is Mark 10:46-52. Have a great rest of the week!

Be peaceful,
Brad
