Be Quiet! |

As we move into Advent, one of the things that many of us will struggle with is how we find the time to do everything that is available to us. Parties are scheduled at the same time; church events conflict with school events; work gatherings overlap with plays and concerts; family traditions run up against any of a hundred things that we would like to do. So here’s my best advice: First, don’t beat yourself up because you can’t do everything. Second, find some time every day to be stop and be quiet. Quiet…there’s a novel concept!
With all the noise that is all around us, the notion of being quiet is one that we too often ignore. But when we are unable to be quiet, we are unable to hold on to the core of what Advent is all about: preparing ourselves to be all that God would have us be. If we only take 10 minutes a day to stop and be quiet and listen for God’s voice, it will be 10 minutes well spent. And be serious, you can find 10 minutes a day can’t you? If not, get up 10 minutes earlier. Take 50 minutes instead of 60 for lunch. Turn off the TV 10 minutes earlier than usual. And sit. Be quiet. Listen. Listen with your heart. Shut out the rest of the world. Stop planning for the next event you need to be to. Just stop and be with God.
Try it today or tomorrow. I guarantee that it will be 10 minutes well used…maybe the best 10 minutes of the day. It may seem hard at first, but if you keep it up, it will be part of your routine, something you look forward to, something that feeds you, something that is part of your spiritual disciplines. And there’s no training needed! Just stop. And be quiet. What you hear will amaze you.

For your prayers; Alex Smith is working hard and making good progress. The rigors of the Shepherd Center are wearing him out, however, and the family and doctors ask for no visitors for at least a while.
Jim Mowrey Jr. is recovering nicely from knee surgery on last Friday.
Jim Mowrey Sr. is doing well after his episode of dizziness and short hospital stay last week.
Announcements There are still about 10 ornaments on the Angel Tree. Pick one up on Sunday, buy gifts and bring them back with the ornament by Sunday December 13 and make some child very happy this Christmas.
If you haven’t signed up to help on the tree lot, go to www.brookhavenchristian.org and do it now! With today’s rain, it will be all the busier the rest of the week and we need you.
If you are thinking about making a year end contribution to the church, our bookkeeper reminds us that if you want to take advantage of a tax deduction on your 2009 taxes, the money must be donated by the end of 2009.
I hope you can join us for worship this Sunday when we will gather for Praise on Peachtree in the fellowship hall. This week’s theme is “Peace” as we celebrate the second Sunday in Advent. Have a great rest of the week!
