Greetings on this blustery day,

The chance to take a break after Christmas and just relax was just too good to pass up. Carol and I were able to get away to Charleston, S.C. to visit my cousins, and even though the big game didn’t turn out the way my cousin Jeananne and I would have liked (she also graduated from Michigan State) we had a nice relaxing time. And while it was good to get away and recharge, I am always excited about starting a new year at the church. There’s just something so hopeful about saying, “Okay, the old year is over and we can leave all the disappointments and missteps behind and start anew.” Even if we really can’t, it’s a nice thought anyway.

One way we start again at the beginning of the year is by welcoming all the new leadership of the church on board, and saying thank you to all those who are stepping away form leadership for now. In my time at BCC, I have been blessed with faithful and committed leadership who, to a person, have always put the needs of the congregation and the ministry of Christ’s church ahead of any personal agenda they might have. Officers, Elders, Deacons…no matter the task, BCC’s cup runneth over with talented and faithful folks.

This year I want to say thank you to those who are cycling out of leadership positions as we begin 2009: Carol Ann Womack, who has served the last several years as congregational secretary and member of the executive team; Charles Kinney who will be stepping away from his role as Trustee after 3 years; Mike McLaughlin who will take a break from the duties of the Permanent Funds Committee after three years. Also stepping back after 3 years in service to this congregation as Deacons are Tom Chipman, Russ Fey, Mary Malek, Mike Parker, and Beth Sheffer. Elders who have served out their three year terms and are now taking a break from those duties are Jaye Atkinson (who served us so very well as our Elder Chair this past year), Jim Mowrey, Mark Hall and Ruth Dunker. Hannah Evans has finished out her one year term as a Junior Deacon, but when she is home from college, we are so pleased when she can help us out. To all of you, thank you for your dedicated service to this congregation and to the church of Jesus Christ. It is greatly appreciated.

That leads us to those who we will install in positions of leadership this Sunday during our morning worship. Returning for a second one year term on the executive team are President Charles Kinney, Vice-President Mark Hall and Treasurer George Hurst. Joining them this year will be Secretary Judy Mowrey. New Deacons beginning a three year term in 2009 are Darrell Rodgers, Susan Smith, Tom Whatley, Daonne Caldwell, Dian McKelvey, Loni Smith and Stan Anderson. Junior Deacons accepting a call for a one year term are Robert Smith, Kevin Kinney, Katie Hazen, Trevor Burch, Will Heaton, Hannah Chipman, Derrick Fey and Joss Olson. Elders coming on board for 3 year terms are Judy Mowrey, Chris Brooks, Terry Evans and Mike McLaughlin. In addition, I am pleased that Jessica Kenfield has agreed to stay on for a second year as Deacon Chair and Marc Burch will be serving this year as Elder Chair.

Come and celebrate with us this Sunday as we welcome these new leaders into the life of the church. And be sure to thank those who have served so well in the past year for they have helped us get where we are today, which is, a pretty good place to be!
