A Sacred Mess |

How does the song go? “Oh, the weather outside is frightful…” Well, that about describes today. Grey, rainy, at times downright frightening with thunder and incredible bursts of drenching downpours. A good day to be inside. But as I sit in my office, I am in the midst of another frightful sight: what a mess! If anyone were to come in and visit for the first time, they would think I am the worst kind of pack rat. But a closer look at what fills up my office at this time of year makes me feel about as good as I have in a long, long time.
Piled in one corner of my office, and spilling out into the main area are bag upon bag of Christmas presents destined for excited boy and girls who, but for your great generosity, would be facing a bleak Christmas. The wish lists of 50 children graced our narthex tree 10 days ago, now there is but a handful. Presents have already started coming in and my office has become the storage area. For those who took a name or two or three, the unwrapped presents are due to the church by this Sunday, December 14th, so they can be sorted and distributed by the folks at the Child Development Center. If you wish to get one of the ones that are left, the time is now!
Starting in the other corner are hundreds of cans of food, the last part of our canned good drive on the Christmas Tree lot. They are in my office because we need to coordinate with the folks at Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church the best time to get them there. We set a goal of 1000 cans in the 10 day drive and as of the end of the sale on Sunday we had right at 1100. But a funny thing has happened: several people have stopped by to drop off even more! Yesterday there were about 30 cans sitting outside the entrance to the office! We are now over 1200 for the drive!
So, the mess that threatens to overtake my office is rooted in generosity and love. And that is a mess that makes me happy. Now, how can we make sure that a happy mess like this continues all year long?

Prayers Please keep Ann Morgan in your prayers after she felled and suffered broken ribs. She and Zeb send their best wishes and want everyone to know they miss them as they both recuperate.
Please keep all those who are facing this holiday season for the first time without a special loved one who has passed on. Hold them close and let them know you remember.
Announcements Don’t forget that next Sunday (December 21st…not this Sunday) we will have our annual Christmas Fellowship Pot Luck Breakfast on the Sunday we celebrate as Christmas Sunday, the Fourth Day of Advent. Sunday school classes will not meet as we gather during the Sunday School hour (come around 9:30 a.m.) in the fellowship hall for fellowship and good food! If you have any questions, contact Debbie Kinney.
Also, make plans to be here on Christmas Eve as we celebrate the birth of our Savior with a Family Candlelight Christmas Eve Service at 6:00 p.m. This service of word, song and lights is one of the highlights of the church year.
I hope you can join us this Sunday as the Chancel Choir under the direction of Jim Mowrey leads us in worship with their Annual Christmas Cantata. This year’s cantata is entitled “Unspeakable Joy” is sure to help us prepare for Christmas in our lives. It is worship of the highest order…don’t miss it. Have a great rest of the week.
Be peaceful, Brad
